June's Sensory Bounty
Every time the Widow Wyile steps
out of her front door
in the early weeks of June
she steps into a haven
of rich colours
strong yet delicate scents
the buzz and chirp of activity
that mark June’s sensory bounty
The lilac blooms have ceded
to a lavish profusion
of half and full globes of orange
showers of creamy-white
summer-butter striped
heavenly-smelling azaleas
and multiplying bouquets
of dark pink rhododendron
a glorious line of bouffant blooms
tended by mighty humble-bees
Kitty corner the wild roses too
have unfurled into pink-petaled
layered saucers
enhancing the divine
olfactory repast
Bearded purple irises rise
from the overgrowth of horsetail
oregano and enormous clover
to sway in the breeze
above the host of volunteer
opening daisies populating the walk
amid the still blooming sea
forget-me-nots going steadily silvery
into seed
Further on the ball buds of peonies
dance below the shiny lush green
of the pear tree
not so long ago
though seeming an age
clad in white
Through the gaps
in the rhodo family line
dance bright yellow

the billowing ringlet locks
of the golden chain tree
By and in the wild wort and
veggie plot stand towering lupins
in all their iconic colours
a simply splendid sight
Sweet rocket buttercups
clovers small and large
and many others merge
alleged lawn into meadow
islands of grasses left standing
nicely tufted heads lilting
in the gently moving air
All of this unmanicured perfection
drawn together in a flash
when mister cardinal flies
his glorious red-plumed self
in a momentary streak
across the scene
