Zucchini Conundrum

Just five little zucchini seeds
planted in the earth
one two three
four five
and we have got
ourselves a lot
a lot   a lot   a LOT
of zuc-zuc-zuc-zucchinis
so many in fact
that we wake up asking
Zucchini Zucchini
Zucchini Umm
what will we do with our
zucchini conundrum?

Brrrring! Brrrring!
Zucchini telephone ring
Pick up please
We have questions
Brrrrring Brrrrring Brrrrring!
Hello? Hello?
Ah, hello Courgette Central
Are you ready?
Here we go:

Zucchini Zucchini
Zucchini Umm
how do you grow
so long      so fat
so fast?
First you’re a finger
then you’re an arm
and if we don’t pick you
Zucchini Zucchini
Umm Umm Umm
next thing we know
you’re as long
and much bigger around
than baby brother/sister’s leg!

We love you when you’re little
nutty buttery raw
as long as a foot or forearm
and svelte like a banana
(just as full of potassium too)

We fry zucchini moons
with garlic and butter and cheese
And we don’t mind eating these

But you’re clever at hiding
and growing like giants
and then we grate you
grate and grate
grate and grate
            (our arms are getting tired!)
grate and grate and grate
till we have mounds of watery strips
that Mum mixes in muffins
stews and cakes
or we hollow you out
and stuff you with crumbs
ground this or that
tomatoes and cheese
but why oh why
did we ever think
just five seeds were very few?

Zucchini Zucchini
Zucchini Umm
We did not know
what we’d begun
though we bite you
slice you
cube and dice you
we just Ummm…
can’t quite keep up

What a bountiful plant you are
Zucchini
Ummmmm….
we’ll grant you that
as we do our best
to share you around
though it seems
most other gardeners too
are muttering
Zucchini Zucchini
Zucchini Umm
what to do
what to do
with ever so many of you?
