September Blows In

September Blows In
Widow Wyile

September blew in stormily
gusts and eddies swirled
clouds amassed and scurried
obscuring the sun
the grey of those transitional days
felt heavy  dank  and   long

So September is
So September can be
Yet whatever is in this moment
also goes

One day the weather was sweltering
and then presto
the very next shifted to remarkably cool
pleasingly fresh
and so it went
and so it goes
then over another night
came the expected
visual switch
crisp mornings and evenings
with welcome sun warmed hours
in between
brought on
bring on
the turn to coloration
of summer greens
to the first fire glow warms
of autumnal arias
in splendorous hues

Now in the middle of the month
with with apple and harvest season well begun
and after school and work traffic
humming along the road
the Widow Wyile sits still
upon the weathered picnic table
sipping tea in the late afternoon sun
admiring the densely pear peopled tree
who now and then audibly plop
to the grass
in their recognizable
yet idiosyncratic dimpled shapes
a community of individuals
attached to the same tree
yet acting at their own pace
in their journey to the ground
where they feed two-  four-  six-leggeds
or gradually return to earth

Their abundance is once again
astonishing to behold
and the summer nourished sweetness
of those preserved
will temper many a winter’s cold
and dark evening moments
when autumn colours
crackle in the woodstove
