Ongoing May Marvels
One week’s potential
is the next week’s bygone phase
pears and cherries cede to apples
buds bloom and burst
from the tree in a shower
of petals hastened by wind
and water that plaster pollen
shredded leaves single
or in clusters
delicate maple flowers
their burgundy petals
and vermicelli tendrils flung
all about cling everywhere
as do immature seed pods
long before they are ready
to helicopter to ground
New blooms have emerged
and more buds formed
so the May blossom parade proceeds
wafting pleasing perfumes
lily-of-the-valley and lilac
while the irises and azaleas plump up
readying for their turn
The ash trees soon too
will cast greater shadows
as their foliage transforms
from sparse yellow-green down
slight dabs from a painter’s brush
that notable soupçon of colour
about the fine tips of twigs
that will green out in lofty robes
when next the Widow Wyile’s pencil
seeks to record the marvels of May
or the joys of June
and more than the mere tips
of the lupins will arise
into cones of splendid colours
